Old stone. New stories.

This centuries-old cottage has grown into our home away from home between travels. Welsh stone and slate sit alongside copper, colour, art and objects that have followed us around the world.

Tractor-seat kitchen stools. An antique bed with very modern comfort. And, yes, an aeroplane hanging from the bedroom ceiling. It’s a personal, slightly unexpected place, made for the things we love: walking, cooking, reading and doing very little at all.

Some of our favourite days here begin without the car keys. Wander towards Rowen, climb into the hills, and stop for a drink on the way back. Then home for that long soak.

Rowen, then the hills

Follow the lane into Rowen and continue into the hills above. Old tracks, prehistoric remains, grazing ponies and views towards Anglesey make a day of it. Come back through the village for a pint at Tŷ Gwyn.

The slower way through the valley

Take the valley footpaths when you have time to meander. They offer a quieter way towards Rowen and Caerhun, with its Roman history and medieval church. Bring boots after rain: the low paths can be muddy.

03A LONGER HILL WALK · OR DRIVE CLOSER

A little church above the valley

Llangelynnin Old Church is a small, ancient place with a remarkable sense of stillness. We usually recommend driving up to the roadside parking near Garnedd Wen, then heading on foot to the church and exploring the hills from there. For a longer outing, take the strenuous 7 km circular walk from Rowen.

A lake, a picnic, nowhere to hurry

Head to Llyn Crafnant for water, woodland and mountain views. Allow 1–2 hours for the waymarked lakeside circuit, or choose the short accessible riverside trail. These routes start at the lake.

The higher routes are proper hill walks, with steep and uneven ground. Follow the linked local routes; their distances start at the named trailheads.

Hi, I’m Maxwell. My wife Anna and I are restoring an old watermill and farm in Portugal, and share our homes in Bath and North Wales while we work and travel.

Arriving & settling in+

Check in from 4pm and check out by 11am. There’s private driveway parking and self check-in. Arrival details are shared privately for your stay.

Beds, baths & the garden+

Two bedrooms sleep four: one king-size bed and two singles. The whole cottage and garden are exclusively yours. The large round tub is an indoor soaking bath, not an outdoor hot tub.

A characterful, rural home+

Some ceilings and doorways are low, and the staircase is open. The cottage is not a good fit for infants under two, though we can offer a travel cot. The garden borders working farmland: sheep, farm sounds and seasonal smells can be part of your stay. The garden’s appearance and views change with the seasons.
